Good morning. It's Thursday, October 15, and we're covering how AI could redesign life itself, why chip-design models still struggle with accuracy, and JPMorgan’s move to block outside AI agents from customer accounts.
Plus: yesterday’s Real or AI verdict and a poll on your vision for AI’s future.

JPMorgan Chase says outside AI agents cannot log in with customer credentials or act inside retail accounts. Customers can still share limited read-only data through approved connectors, but the bank is drawing a line at agents that could move money or pay bills.
An open letter signed by 420 scientists calls on labs to keep cyber-capable AI models disconnected from the internet by default until stronger safeguards are in place. The group also wants an international body to set containment standards and track security failures.
A federal judge ordered OpenAI to give Apple expedited access to interview materials involving former Apple employees in the companies’ trade-secret fight. OpenAI has five days to provide records it already collected and 14 days for additional materials covered by the order.

SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY
AI Is Learning to Design Life From Scratch

AI models are beginning to treat DNA and proteins the way language models treat text: as long sequences whose patterns can be learned, predicted and rewritten. The Economist reports that systems such as Evo 2 can analyze DNA segments as long as a small bacterial genome, while tools such as Sidewinder can assemble increasingly large stretches of synthetic DNA with high accuracy.
The near-term use is practical—designing drugs, proteins and crops that are more likely to work before researchers spend years testing them. The larger possibility is much more consequential: models that help scientists modify existing organisms or eventually design new ones. → Read the full article here. (Paywall)

CHIP DESIGN
AI Can Design Chips Faster, But Makes Mistakes

NVIDIA and ChipAgents released a benchmark that tests AI across the full chip-design process, from specifications and code to verification. Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 powered the best-performing agent, but it solved only 16.6% of the benchmark—evidence that today’s models can help engineers without reliably replacing them.
ChipAgents says AI has already helped shrink a typical chip-development cycle from at least two years to about one by automating slow verification work, and CEO William Wang expects that timeline could fall to four to six months. The next test is whether those gains hold on real commercial designs, where a small error can delay manufacturing or ruin an expensive production run. → Read the full article here. (Paywall)
ROBOTICS
Robots That Switch Tasks in Minutes, Not Weeks

San Francisco-based Industrial Next announced a partnership with BMW Group Technology Office, to evaluate its AI-powered robotic manipulation technology for manufacturing. Founded in 2021 by former Tesla engineers Lukas Pankau and Allen Pan, the startup builds robotic workstations that use high-fidelity simulations to learn complex tasks.
The company says its systems can be reconfigured for new production lines in minutes rather than weeks. Industrial Next also reports that its robots already perform delicate assembly tasks for an unnamed smartphone maker, including fitting tiny connectors. → Read the full article here.

POLL RESULTS: REAL OR AI
Can You Still Tell What’s Real?
Yesterday's passage was REAL; Dr. Ian Malcolm delivers the famous speech in the 1993 film Jurassic Park. Here's how you voted: 60% identified it as real, while 40% thought it was AI-generated.
"I’ll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you’re using here: it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step... You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it." - Dr. Ian Malcolm (played by Jeff Goldblum), 1993 film Jurassic Park. | 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 REAL - 60% |
