Twenty-four grams inside one ear cup can shape an entire product.
In xMEMS’ engineering comparison, a conventional 50mm driver assembly weighs approximately 42 grams. A speaker plate built around our solid-state speaker weighs just 18 grams. That difference can be used to extend battery life, reduce overall weight, or create a thinner ear cup.
It also exposes a problem in the way many headphones are designed.
Most product teams begin with a 40mm or 50mm dynamic driver, reserve the space and weight it requires, and fit everything else around it. For years, that was a sensible approach. The primary engineering priorities were sound quality – and the bigger the driver the better the performance.
AI changes the calculation. Headphones are being asked to listen for voice commands, run more processing locally, and understand what is happening around the wearer. Those capabilities require additional compute, battery capacity, and carefully positioned microphones and sensors.
Yet the speaker is often treated as the one part of the product that cannot move or change.
That is the mistake. Dynamic drivers can sound good. But continuing to treat a decades-old mechanical design as the fixed starting point limits what an AI headphone can become.
Consider what happens when a product team adds an on-device voice model.
The processor is only part of the bill. Sustained processing may require a larger battery and a better thermal plan, while voice interaction may require additional microphones with precise placement. Furthermore, wireless performance still depends on finding clean space for antennas.
If the speaker already occupies much of the ear cup, these additions tend to produce a familiar set of compromises – a deeper enclosure, more weight, shorter battery life, or a feature that gets pushed to the next generation.
Comfort makes those decisions even harder. People may wear the same headphones through several hours of calls, travel, and entertainment. A few grams that seem inconsequential on a specification sheet become noticeable over time. So does ear-cup depth.
The industry often tries to solve this problem through lighter structural materials or more elaborate headbands and cushions. Those measures can help. But they work around the speaker rather than reconsidering it.
What Changes When the Speaker Shrinks
At xMEMS, we have approached the problem from the opposite direction: What happens if the speaker itself is manufactured like a semiconductor rather than assembled from magnets, coils, and other conventional mechanical parts?
Our full-range solid-state speaker for headphones measures 85 mm³ and weighs 150 milligrams. In our comparison, the speaker device is 98% smaller by volume than a conventional 50mm dynamic driver, which occupies approximately 4,000 mm³. It requires about 1cc of back volume. See Figure 1.

That’s important because space inside a headphone is not interchangeable. A smaller speaker can open room near the ear for a thinner enclosure. Reducing the weight of the acoustic assembly can let a designer add battery capacity and more processing without increasing the product’s total weight – or simply build a lighter headphone. Removing the conventional magnetic structure can also simplify decisions about where antennas and sensors are placed. See Figure 2.

None of this eliminates the need to deliver excellent sound. A smaller speaker that compromises frequency response, output, or fidelity does not solve the problem. The point is that product teams should no longer assume strong acoustic performance requires accepting the same physical constraints.
Start With a Different Question
Headphone makers are investing heavily in more capable processors, AI models, and sensing technologies. But those investments will deliver diminishing returns if every new feature must be squeezed around a speaker selected before the rest of the system takes shape.
The better question is not, “How much more intelligence can we fit into this headphone?”
It is, “What would we build if the speaker stopped taking so much off the table?”
Ultimately, the next generation of AI headphones will require manufacturers to rethink the speaker and create the physical room their added intelligence demands.
